Marfan syndrome grabbed the headlines in late June as Isaiah Austin, a college basketball player who was projected to be a first-round selection in the NBA draft, was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome and could not enter the draft. Following his university’s statement, we posted a statement on our website. National media, popular media, and sports media – including WABC-TV, People.com, Scientific American, Houston Chronicle, Yahoo Sports, SBNation and hundreds more covered Marfan syndrome. Everyone wanted to know the signs and the dangers. The Foundation is helping Isaiah and his family as they learn about this diagnosis and is developing plans to work with them to identify ways to collaborate to increase early diagnosis in young people.
