Marfan Syndrome is Center Court

(From, the website of The Marfan Foundation)
Marfan syndrome grabbed the headlines in late June as Isaiah Austin, a college basketball player who was projected to be a first-round selection in the NBA draft, was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome and could not enter the draft. Following his university’s statement, we posted a statement on our website. National media, popular media, and sports media – including WABC-TV,, Scientific American, Houston Chronicle, Yahoo SportsSBNation and hundreds more covered Marfan syndrome. Everyone wanted to know the signs and the dangers. The Foundation is helping Isaiah and his family as they learn about this diagnosis and is developing plans to work with them to identify ways to collaborate to increase early diagnosis in young people.

Nicholas Umbs finally wins TCI Foundation Scholarship

Dear Nicholas (from Menomonee Falls):

It is with extreme pleasure that I have enclosed a check for $1000.00 to help you in your pursuit of a college education. There were mere decimal points separating each of the finalists for the 2013 Foundation scholarships. We did not have a policy in effect to deal with TCI family applicants at the time of evaluation.

We now have the policy in effect and due to an upturn in our investments we would like to offer you this scholarship at this time. It is very important for the Foundation to honor the family members of our faithful TCI members. We had never figured this happening in our scholarship criteria.

I sincerely hope that we will find your name on a club roster some day. Best of luck in all your future endeavors.

Yours in tallism,

Carolyn Goldstein
TCI Foundation Chair

Subject: Chicago Weekend – Major Publicity Event

Hi Wanda and Barry,
Can you please send this out to MTT and Milwaukee members who might be coming to Chicago’s Weekend on Friday night?
Hi Everyone,
Ford Motor Company is planning on arriving at the Hilton Garden Inn around noon on Friday, Jan. 24th to prepare for an introduction of their newest vehicle, the Transit Connect Wagon, during a cocktail party/reception with Tall Clubs International.   Supposedly this new vehicle has much more leg room and head room and they are looking for our endorsement.  Ford contacted Sue Karon, TCI Publicity about this exciting opportunity.
Press will be invited, the vehicle may be in the lobby or ballroom.    We are still working out all the details between TCI, Paramount, Ford and the hotel.    Just wanted to give you all a “heads up” to try and be at the hotel by 6pm so you won’t miss it!   Ford will be compensating our guests with food or drinks that evening.   So leave work early and come on down to share in this exciting publicity.

Paramount President and Weekend Co-Chair

Merry Christmas, Hanukkah and Happy New Year

We finally got a basic  fall 2013 newsletter out for the club. Little did we know that while trying to be funny about birthdays, Tom actually had had a stroke. None of us knew until late December when his sister wrote back about the note written on Tom’s newsletter – “What has happened to you Tom?”. If you’re a friend of his, he can be sent letters at Manor Care, N26w23977 Watertown Rd, Waukesha, WI 53188. He’s lost control of the left half of his body but is alert and can still eat and talk. Friend support is needed now. That’s something us tall friends can do!

I am going to visit Tom on Christmas Eve Day and leave a shoebox of club photographs from over the years. Perhaps he will like to talk to others about some of them.

Laura Cofran who used to be with the Chicago Paramount Tall Club moved to Prince Edward Island with her husband Jeff some years ago. She also could use your prayers – after a ruptured brain anneurism left her in a coma for nearly a month. At present they are trying to ween her off a respirator. Jeff has a blog about her progress at

I wish everyone else a healthy and happy holiday season and hope to see some of you next year, if not before.   -Dave, President or General Manager of the Tall Club of Milwaukee.

October events

We had a great turnout and fine weather during Oktoberfest at Bavarian Field in Glendale on Sep 21 as can be seen in the previous picture. Some members from the Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee clubs.

October we have 2 items currently scheduled. On Thursday the 10th there is a discounted (groupon already purchased) dinner for 4, and however many more come at Bluemound Gardens, and then team trivia at 7pm.

On Saturday Oct 26, Dave invites his tall and other friends to share in his first concert of the year with the Concord Chamber Orchestra, followed by a reception thereafter.

Details for both of these can be found on the Milwaukee Talls Meetup

Questions? Call the club voicemail at 414-9TALL01 or 414-982-5501 and someone will get back to you.
